It’s been great to welcome Johnny Worthington from SATRA to WEBS Training for him to complete some training in upholstery – bringing together industry training and testing.
Satra are a testing house for product safety, compliance, and durability across a range of sectors, where Johnny looks after the testing for furniture and floorcoverings – the areas we train. He wanted to try his hand at upholstery to support him in conversations with the businesses he works with, and we have to say he has been an excellent honorary apprentice!
Johnny joined a block release group and learned from start to finish how to prep, cut, sew, and upholster a footstool – which now takes pride of place in his living room.
On the training, Johnny says “Although I’ve worked at SATRA for nearly 30 years, much of my career has focused on testing, certification, quality and standards. Stepping into the workshop and learning upholstery from the ground up gave me a whole new appreciation for the craftsmanship, skill and attention to detail that goes into producing quality furniture.
“Over four days, I learned each stage of the process from webbing and padding through to sewing, piping and applying the final fabric. It was incredibly rewarding to see the project come together and come home with a footstool that I made myself!
“A huge thank you to Samarah Dawson, Joseph Bryan, and the whole WEBS Furniture Training team for their patience, encouragement and willingness to share their knowledge throughout the week!
“This experience reinforced something I’ve always believed: no matter how long you’ve been in your career, there’s always value in stepping outside your comfort zone and learning something new.”
During the visit, Johnny also shared some of his knowledge with our apprentices and training staff which has been very interesting and can be applied in future training sessions on legislation and product development.
We’re glad you have enjoyed your visit!
