Becoming an Apprentice

Requirements for being an apprentice at WEBS

What you achieved at school doesn’t matter – it is all about you as a person.

For our Level 2 apprenticeships we don’t expect you to have any prior knowledge or training – the course is about training you in a new skill.

During your apprenticeship you will need to complete Functional Skills in maths and English if you have not already achieved these – but don’t worry – we offer one-to-one support to get your functional skills so you can complete your apprenticeship.

Who do we work with?

We work with employers across the country who want to invest in their next generation of workforce by employing apprentices, where we provide the apprenticeship training.

When they have a vacancy for an apprentice, we advertise it for them and start the recruitment process.

It is important to read all of the details on the vacancy so you can decide whether the course and workplace is suitable for you.

How to apply

All of our applications are processed online.

To apply for one of our apprenticeships you will need:

  • A CV
  • A cover letter

Certain apprenticeships will need specific criteria, such as having a driving license, as this may be required as part of the job role (e.g. for becoming a floorlayer).

Please check the location of the vacancy to ensure you will be able to get to work, and that the commute isn’t too long for you – it will be your responsibility as an apprentice to ensure you are able to make it to work on time.

Please also check the wage as this can vary between employers.

WEBS interview

If your application is successful then you will be invited to an initial interview with WEBS. This is to learn more about you as a person, your interests, and for you to show positive behaviours and attitudes.

This interview will usually take place online, but we would still expect you to look presentable and use your camera for the interview if possible.

We are not expecting you to have any experience of the skills needed in the job role, as these will be trained throughout the apprenticeship, but we would like you to have a basic understanding of the trade and company advertised.

We will also go through the following with you:

  • Check you would be able to get to the workplace
  • Confirm basic details of the role such as working hours
  • Explain training format and basic details of the apprenticeship
  • Check if you would require functional skills training during your apprenticeship

Remember – the WEBS interview is not just to check that you are right for the apprenticeship, but also for you to make sure the course and job role is right for you.

Company interview

Becoming an Apprentice Company Overview

Following the WEBS interviews, we put together a shortlist of candidates which we give to the employer.

If you are successfully shortlisted, the company will then conduct a formal interview to confirm whether you are suitable for their business.

This may be in person or online.

The company may ask additional questions about your experience and transferable skills.

Again – this interview is also for you to ask questions about the job and decide whether it is right for you, so it is good practice to have a think about anything you would like to know ahead of the interview.

Job offer

If you are successful you will then receive a formal offer of employment as an apprentice.

This will include a contract of employment containing all of the information about your job – including working hours, annual leave, and any other benefits.

This is organised by your employer and not by WEBS.

Shortly after your first day of employment, WEBS will visit you at your workplace to complete your apprenticeship sign up, which includes completing the paperwork for your apprenticeship.

And that’s it! You would then be an apprentice, and start your training.
